Pipestone, Minnesota is a town located along the Cannonball River in Pipestone County. It was created as a trading post by French traders and later used by the Sioux and Ojibway tribes.
The first settlers arrived in 1855. The area was then named "Pipestone" after a stone that was found nearby. The stone was used as an ornament and eventually became known as "Pipestone."
